SI-Clauses (also known as Conditional Sentences)
When speaking French (or any other language), it is important to use the correct sequence of tenses. In complex sentences, there is a relationship between the verb in the main clause and the verb in the subordinate clause. Using the correct sequence of tenses is just as important as conjugating the verbs correctly and using the appropriate mood.
There are 3 main types of Si-clauses:

Si + présent >
(then) futur |
Si je travaille plus, j' obtiendrai de meilleures notes
|
Si je travaille plus,
Si tu travailles, S'il travaille, Si nous travaillons, Si vous travaillez, S'ils travaillent, |
Conjugation patterns in the Present Tense here
|
j' obtiendrai de meilleures notes
tu obtiendras il obtiendra nous obtiendrons vous obtiendrez ils obtiendront |
How to conjugate verbs in the Future:
Use the entire verb as the stem, adding ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont at the end. Same for regular –ir verbs, like finir (to finish). Regular -re verbs also follow a pattern: simply remove the “e” from the ending of the infinitive and add your futureendings. |
Si + imperfect > conditional
|
Si je travaillais plus, j'obtiendrais de meilleures notes
|
Si je travaillais plus,
Si tu travaillais, S'il travaillait, Si nous travaillions, Si vous travailliez, S'ils travaillaient, |
How to conjugate verbs in the Imperfect:
The stem consists of the first-person plural (nous) form of the present tense without the ons ending. Add the following endings to the stem: ais, ais, ait, ions, iez, aient. |
j'obtiendrais de meilleures notes
tu obtiendrais il obtiendrait nous obtiendrions vous obtiendriez ils obtiendraient |
To form the conditional tense, add the imperfect endings to the future stem.
|
Si + pluperfect > conditional perfect
|
Si j'avais travaillé plus, j'aurais obtenu de meilleures notes
|
|
Si j'avais travaillé plus,
Si tu avais travaillé, S'il avait travaillé, Si nous avions travaillé, Si vous aviez travaillé, S'ils avaient travaillé, |
To form the pluperfect, use the imperfect tense of avoir or être and add the past participle.
|
j'aurais obtenu de meilleures notes
tu aurais obtenu il aurait obtenu nous aurions obtenu vous auriez obtenu ils auraient obtenu |
The conditional perfect, or past conditional, is used to express action that would have occurred if in the past circumstances had been different. To form the conditional perfect, use the conditional form of avoir or être and add the past participle.
