Note 1: Most common negatives: Il ne parle jamais en Français : He never speaks in French Elle ne mange rien : She doesn't eat anything / she eats nothing Je ne connais personne ici : I don't know anybody here / I know no one here Nous n’y allons plus: We don't go there anymore / We no longer go there A. Unjumble the following sentences. Eg.: ne pas je fais sciences les > Je ne fais pas les sciences
Note 2: When you use ne + a negative with a noun, replace un/une/des with de. Remember that 'de' abbreviates into 'd' ' before a vowel. Elle ne mange pas de bonbons : She doesn't eat any sweets Il n’y a plus de timbres : There aren't any stamps left / There are no more stamps Je n’ai jamais d’argent : I never have any money B. Note 4: When using the negative with the perfect tense, put ne before the auxiliary and pas, plus, jamais or rien before the past participle: Nous n'avons rien fait. D. Complete the list of things which the family did not do while Mum was away for a few days.
Note 5: - Ne…aucun means “no…” or “not a single…”. Aucun is an adjective and agrees with the noun that follows it (that is, you add an -e with a feminine noun) - Ne…ni…ni means “neither…nor”; ne goes before the verb and ni goes (twice) before the words they relate to. - Ne …que is one way to say “only”. Ne is placed before the verb; que is always placed before the word or phrase on which it places a restriction. E. Translate the following into English: 1. On ne travaillera que le samedi matin > 2.
